Aishwarya Rai or Aishwarya Bachchan was born in Mangalore, a coastal town in Karnataka. She was pursuing her studies in Architecture during which she was crowned Miss World. After much speculation she got married to Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007 in a private ceremony held at the Bachchan' bungalow Prateeksha. She is currently the highest paid actress in Bollywood.
Aishwarya has acted in Hindi, English, Tamil and Bengali films. Aishwarya Rai made her debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil language film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal. But she had to wait a couple of years to get recognition in the film world. She featured in many Tamil flicks, which were commercial hits. Some among them are Jeans, Kandukonden kandukonden etc. Aishwarya then appeared in many Bollywood films including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999) for which her performance was appreciated. She got the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. In 2002 through ‘Devdas’ she got international attention through its special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. As her name gained popularity in the West, she was chosen by the world famous Time magazine in 2004 and 2003, to appear on the cover of the magazine. She was also featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. Rai has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, and was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. She became the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film festival. Aishwarya’s foreign films ‘Bride and Prejudice’ and ‘Mistress of Spices’ were critically acclaimed, the former commercially successful.
Aishwarya Rai appeared in ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ in a hugely popular seven-minute dance sequence for the song "Kajra Re". The dance sequence paired Rai with Abhishek Bachchan and Amithabh Bachchan who became a part of her family later. She paired with Abhishek Bachan in Umrao Jaan and Dhoom-2 in 2006. 2007 saw the release of Mani Ratnam's Guru, which premiered in Toronto. The film, based on the life of successful Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, was both commercially and critically very successful. Her most recent film, Provoked, was released on 6 April 2007 in India and the UK. It was critically acclaimed all over the world. At the end of April 2007 her first American film, The Last Legion, was released in Russia and the Netherlands. The film is expected to open in North American theaters in August 2007. Aishwarya’s wax statue is in display at New York’s prestigious Madame Tussauds Wax museum at Time Square.
