Of the over 60 bollywood films made in 2008; Shahrukh's 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi', Aamir Khan's 'Ghajini', Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan's 'Jodhaa Akbar', Akshay Kumar & Katrina Kaif's 'Singh Is Kinng' and Ranbir Kapoor & Deepika Padukone starrer 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' have all made it to the top ten on the blockbuster charts of the box office.
Away from the hustle bustle of blockbuster hits, 'Slumdog Millionaire' [2008] too made it to the international headlines. This Hindi movie directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle has the lead pair in two unknown stars Dev Patel & Freida Pinto who put in a spectacular performance. Thanks to its storyline, the movie is set in the slums of Mumbai. A slum-dweller who participates in "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" the Indian version of the television game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" reaches the last round of the questionnaire and is just one question away from winning the grand prize of Rs.20 million. With bollywood filmy elements coming into play the movie veers round the hero, his life in the slums of Mumbai and his romantic flings with his girlfriend Latika played by Freida Pinto all added up to the grand success of the movie earning awards, honors and accolades from the world fraternity of the film critics. In addition, 'Slumdog Millionaire' won 8 Oscars & 2 nominations; won 7 BAFTAs & 4 nominations; and won 4 Golden Globes including another 66 wins and 21 nominations of various awards internationally.
During 2009 of the 35 films made for the first quarter; Akshay Kumar & Deepika Padukone starrer 'Chandni Chowk To China', Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor starrer 'Delhi 6', and Emrran Hashmi's horror film 'Raaz - The Mystery Continues' are already sitting atop the top ten on the blockbuster charts of the box office.
Still 26 movies are slated for release this 2009. John Abraham & Katrina Kaif starrer 'New York', Akshay Kumar & Kareena Kapoor starrer 'Kambakkht Ishq', Shahrukh Khan's 'Dulha Mil Gaya', Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar & Lara Dutta starrer 'Blue', Aamir Khan's 'Three Idiots'. Apart from these, a number of small budget movies too are jostling for space at the box office this year.
Come December 2009 and the moviegoers will know which bollywood movies are going to make it to the top ten at the box office.
